RETURN TO THE HOMEPAGE
THE OCEAN LINERS |
||||
Welcome to our website
paying tribute to the famous S/S Oriana, the last ocean liner built at
Vickers Armstrong Ltd, Barrow in Furness and indeed the largest ocean
liner ever built in England. She is the last survivor of the famous
Orient Steam Navigation Company ships that plied the route from London
or Southampton to Australia via the Suez Canal. She was a contemporary
of P&O's Canberra and the Oriana along with the Canberra marked the
climax in the coming together of the P&O and Orient Line fleets and
capabilities.
After being preserved for many years in June 2004 she was badly damaged in a storm at her permanent berth in Dalian, China and in May 2005 she was towed to a shipyard in Zhangiangang where scrapping commenced on the 9th August 2005. Thus ends the life of the last survivor of the great ships of Orient Line. This website aims to record the history of this famous British ocean liner and act as a virtual home to honour and commemorate this fine ship. We hope you enjoy this website and when you leave we hope you will visit again soon.
